Adapting Spaces: Ensuring Accommodation Matches Children's Needs

Brighter Stays is situated in Stotfold, Bedfordshire, offering numerous country walks and recreational parks. Additionally, Stotfold is home to football, cricket, and rugby clubs. The town is conveniently located, just a short drive or train ride away from Hitchin, as well as nearby towns like Stevenage, Letchworth, Bedford, and Biggleswade.

The residences enjoy convenient proximity to local amenities such as GP and dental services, with a park and a selection of shops just a few minutes' walk away, including a barber/hairdresser and a Tesco. Additionally, a modern gym offering fitness classes is located within a 10-minute walk. Nearby, there are various churches and mosques, while the bustling shopping center in Stevenage, complete with a bowling alley, arcades, and restaurants, is conveniently situated only 15 minutes away.

Letchworth train station is reachable in 15 minutes, and Hitchin in just 7 minutes, both offering regular lines to London and Cambridge.

Several secondary schools with sixth form colleges are within walking distance or a short bus ride away.

Furthermore, the buildings are equipped with a Ring doorbell, capturing the front entrance within the property's boundaries, in adherence to our monitoring systems policy.

Health and safety checks

We understand that permission for any monitoring systems and identified adaption restrictions are required from the placing authority or parents and consents will be kept on the young people’s individual file.

The home conducts regular health and safety checks along with necessary fire drills, listed below:

  • Alarm tests are carried out weekly by staff.

  • Alarm points are tested alternatively to ensure they are working order.

  • All alarm test points are recorded in the house fire log.

  • Emergency lighting tests are carried out at the same time weekly and recorded in the fire log.

  • Fire evacuation drills are carried out every 3 months and when a new young person or member of staff is introduced to the service.

  • Employees/ young people are trained and aware of the fire procedures and of the location of firefighting equipment, escape routes from the premises from the premises a meeting points, as part of their induction/admission.

  • Employees will ensure there are no obstructions to any firefighting equipment or escape route.

  • Employees must report any deficient firefighting/safety equipment to the manager immediately.

  • Employees all trained any actions to be taken in the event of a fire emergency.

  • Any person discovering the fire will immediately raise the alarm.

  • In the event of a fire or sounding of the alarms the building must be evacuated as quickly as possible via any appropriate fire exit.

  • The designated person staff member what is show the individual responsibilities undertaken, which include:

  • Young people and any visitors vacate the building.

  • The daily log and visitors book are taken out in order to check that all young people visitors and staff can be accounted for and provide the fire service with accurate information.

  • Telephone 999 requesting the services of the fire service.

ACCOMMODATION

Brighter Stays operates two welcoming houses specifically designed to accommodate young care leavers aged 16 and above. These houses serve as more than just shelters; they are nurturing environments where residents can find solace and support as they navigate the transition into adulthood. Each house is meticulously crafted to foster a sense of safety and belonging. Offering shelter and also emotional and psychological support.

HEALTH & CARE

Young residents benefit from easy access to essential healthcare services and amenities. Our homes are conveniently located near local GP practices, dental clinics, parks, and shops including a barber/hairdresser and Tesco. The nearby gym offers modern facilities and fitness classes, while various churches and mosques provide opportunities for community engagement and support in Cambridge.

FACILITIES

We offer comfortable and supportive accommodation tailored to the needs of young care leavers. Each resident enjoys the privacy of their own private bedroom, providing a personal sanctuary within our communal living environment. Our shared communal areas are thoughtfully designed to foster a sense of community and belonging, providing spaces for socializing, studying, and relaxation.

The organisational structure, including management structure and staffing arrangements.

The Service manager and Nominated individual has the overall responsibility for the operation and functioning of the home. The team is also made up from a senior support worker, 3 supported accommodation support workers and a compliance/recruitment member of staff. Members of staff from other departments within our organisation support the running of the home by offering additional support to adults and the young people.

All staff members have current, enhanced DBS, formal supervision on a regular basis, supervision is the key process by which managers can ensure are aware of the contribution they are expected to make, as individuals and as members of the team, they are supported to do this through individual performance and development plans. Formal supervision is supported by informal supervision delivered by the service manager or senior members of the team as and when required.

The purpose of supervision:

  • Promote an honest working relationship

  • Ensure staff roles and responsibilities are clear

  • Develop an open culture which is supportive to all staff and encourages and motivates them

  • Enable staff to achieve the necessary skills to deliver good practice

  • Ensure the high standards of service to the young people are achieved, maintained and enhanced

  • Reflect on and improve practice

  • Develop a culture of equality

Further support is provided through weekly team meetings, which all staff are expected to attend and daily handovers. A management and senior staff will provide on-call support for out of hours emergencies and incidents.
