Prioritising Health and Safety: Protocols for Protecting Children's Mental and Physical Well-being

The well-being of our young individuals, both physical and mental, is our top priority. We are dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle, tailoring dietary plans, exercise routines, and relaxation techniques to meet each young person's unique needs, ensuring a well-rounded and diverse lifestyle. We engage in open discussions with the young person to address their dietary preferences and requirements.

We foster and endorse a healthy lifestyle for our young individuals by accompanying them to the gym and engaging in local sports activities.

Additionally, our staff encourage involvement with external services to address issues related to smoking, alcohol, and substance use, as applicable.

It is our goal for all young people to maintain good health, and we assist them in registering with local healthcare providers such as GPs, opticians, and dentists, providing them with a comprehensive list of available options. Staff members offer support as needed to attend appointments, and as the young people become more independent, we empower them to schedule their own appointments.

All staff members are either trained or in the process of completing First Aid training as part of mandatory training requirements. The home is equipped with fully stocked First Aid boxes, which are routinely checked to ensure availability of essential items. This ensures that our young people have access to necessary First Aid supplies for minor injuries.

Medication

Some of our young individuals may necessitate medication for various purposes, and we endeavor to collaborate closely with primary care services to ensure that any medication administered is solely for therapeutic reasons. While children and young people in our supported accommodation are expected to self-manage their medication, there may be instances where temporary support is necessary. All our staff members undergo training in the Safe Handling of Medicines, and we ensure that our children are instructed on how to store and administer their medication safely.

Each placed child will undergo an individual risk assessment to facilitate safe medication management.

Every young person will have a health plan tailored to their specific needs, subject to regular review, with any concerns promptly addressed by the team around the child. In cases where specific therapeutic techniques are identified in a Care Plan and endorsed by the Placing Authority, they will be administered by a practitioner holding a currently recognized qualification in the relevant therapy.

Our comprehensive policies related to medication management and health are readily available upon request.
