We have a demonstrable track record of providing high quality and flexible services for both care leavers and their commissioning Local Authority. Our services are built around the needs of the young person, and the objectives of their responsible authority
Brighter stays supports young people to achieve independence – through informal but structured day-to-day personalised support, and a specific Preparation for Independence programme. Preparation for Independence covers the skills to live independently, eg. money management, housing, rights and responsibilities, health, volunteering, safety, relationships, running a household and employment, education or training.
Our structured, strengths-based ‘Independent Living Journey’ teaches independent living skills and records progress in a bespoke workbook that young people co-produce. Young people can choose to work towards AQA accreditation, which provides valuable, recognisable qualifications evidencing their skillset as well as providing a sense of achievement.
Topics covered during the ‘Independent Living Journey’ include:
Hopes and aspirations
Money management, bank accounts, bills and benefits
Health and wellbeing, such as doctor and dentist registrations, smoking, drugs and alcohol
Cooking, diet, nutrition and exercise
Mental health and wellbeing, including resilience and how to find help
Healthy relationships and sexual health
Healthy relationships with family and friends, and sources of support
Education, employment and training
Accommodation, including types of tenancies, DIY and cleaning
Self-care, personal hygiene and staying safe in person and online
Travelling and public transport.
Our staff will promote and encourage each of our young persons' education by working with the local authority to enrol them into a local educational provision where possible.
Where this is not possible, delays in enrolment or they may not meet the assessed needs of the young person, we will be led and guided by the Virtual Educational Head/Lead. ..
We aim for all young people to be of good health and support them to register with the local GP, opticians, and dentist-a list will be provided. Staff will support as necessary to attend appointments and as they become more independent support them to book their own appointments.
All staff are trained or working towards completing the First Aid course training as part of the mandatory training ....
We acknowledge that not all young people will feel comfortable to raise any issues or to participate in a house meeting, so we also encourage informal conversations and house meetings.
For example around breakfast on a Saturday morning or lunch on a Sunday afternoon, which the young people are encouraged to prepare alongside staff.
The placement meeting will identify contact arrangements and we will undertake to carry out those arrangements, either within the home (if appropriate), local community or transporting the child to an agreed venue.
